Morocco - 2023 Marrakesh - Ben Yousseff Madrasa

We spent the first week of our stay in Morocco in Marrakesh, in an AirBnB located at the edge of the Medina. Our main focus was to explore this old part of the city, to photograph the people, the streets, and the extraordinary architecture.

Ben Yousseff Madrasa, an Islamic college built in the 16th century. It is now a historic site, but functioned as a school where Islamic scholars were trained. As many as 800 students were housed in the school.

The structure is an outstanding example of the exquisite Moroccan architecture. The intricately detailed ornamentation includes tile work, wood sculpture, and extensive plaster carvings. In my photographs, I tried to capture the overall effects as well as close-ups of the detail work.
