Morocco - 2023 Marrakesh - On the Street

We spent the first week of our stay in Morocco in Marrakesh, in an AirBnB located at the edge of the Medina. Our main focus was to explore this old part of the city, to photograph the people, the streets, and the extraordinary architecture.

The medina in Marrakesh dates back to the 11th century. It is fascinating for someone from Canada to try and take in how long these walls have been standing here.

The medina appears like a labyrinth of streets and alleys, all conceived to keep potential enemies confused.

Mohammed - yes, I know, it seems like most Moroccans are named Mohammed - Mohammed works at a Amman where he feeds the fire throughout the day, from sunrise to sunset, to heat the baths. Our guide took us to see him. He was agreeable to being photographed, then he came up and played the lotar and sang a song for us.

The Jemaa al-fnaa is a square in the center of the medina. It is surrounded by restaurants and shops. The square is busy all day, but at night, it fills with vendors, street musicians, and performers. Crowds mill about, the music and the bustle makes for a truly joyful experience.
